World Design Capital 2024: San Diego/Tijuana

Brief

The goal of this project is to create a compelling product concept and its accompanying packaging prototype to commemorate the WDC 2424 San Diego Tijuana. This design should encapsulate the unique qualities of our region, inspiring a sense of cultural exchange, unity, and celebration for both San Diego and Tijuana.

Summary

My response to the goal was to design a reusable cup holder/cup that relies on being as minimalist as possible. The theming was based around the unique coffee culture found on both sides of the border. The packaging contains a welcome message to visitors of the WDC as well as select coffee shops from both sides. The design was inspired by various Mexican patterns.

Early Explorations

Design System

The type was chosen to have a modern feel for the primary and secondary texts while the logotype was a traced inspiration of a Mexican-inspired font to give it more of a handmade and home feel. The colors are representative of the holiday “Día de los Muertos” while the icons are representative of coffee elements and Mexican patterns.
